Dashin’s Foundation strengthens its commitment to environmental stewardship by collecting 180kg of litter in Akrotiri
As part of its long-term commitment to environmental stewardship and the protection of Cyprus’s natural heritage, Andrey & Julia Dashin’s Foundation, together with Exinity and ECOmbare, successfully carried out a beach clean-up at Akrotiri, one of the island’s most ecologically important coastlines. The area serves as a nesting site for the endangered green turtle (Chelonia mydas) and the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta). These two species rely on the safety of these shores to lay their eggs and ensure the survival of future generations. Despite its ecological significance, the Akrotiri coastline faces increasing pollution threats. Litter and plastics not only disrupt the natural landscape but also pose serious risks to both adult turtles and hatchlings, making their first journey to the sea.
In response to these growing challenges, 45 volunteers, including 24 adults and 21 children, the youngest just four years old, came together for a day dedicated to collective action and environmental education. Participants joined a friendly clean-up competition to collect as much litter as possible, while younger children took part in a turtle-themed treasure hunt, learning about marine life as they helped restore the beach. Through this joint effort, volunteers collected 180kg of litter, significantly improving the condition of the nesting habitat. A cheerful award ceremony followed, where the winning team, Turtle Savers, received a certificate celebrating their contribution. The day concluded with a relaxed picnic and a turtle-themed quiz.
Reflecting on the initiative, Andrey Dashin, Founder of the Andrey & Julia Dashin’s Foundation, noted: “With Akrotiri Salt Lake being the largest in Cyprus and a sanctuary for more than 250 bird species, including the magnificent pink flamingos, as well as a nesting site for rare sea turtles, it is our duty to keep these shores clean and safe. These turtles have extraordinary navigation abilities, returning to the very same beach where they were born, even after travelling thousands of kilometres across the sea. It’s a beautiful reminder of the power of nature and the responsibility we all share to protect it. When communities come together with genuine care and a common purpose, we can create real and lasting change.”
This initiative underscores the shared mission of the Foundation, Exinity, and ECOmbare to actively respond to climate challenges, foster a deeper connection with nature, and safeguard Cyprus’s coastlines, not only for the wildlife that depends on them but also for future generations.
By continuing to support environmental actions across the island, Andrey & Julia Dashin’s Foundation remains a dedicated advocate for the protection, restoration, and preservation of Cyprus’s unique natural landscapes.
