Andrey & Julia Dashin’s Foundation celebrates Russian Maslenitsa by sponsoring a concert free for all

On 17 February, at 10 am, a 100 children aged 3 to 17 years old and 50 adults came together to perform a festive programme of songs, dances and folk games in line with the traditions of the Russian celebration of Maslenitsa, in the Ayios Athanasios theatre in Limassol. Andrey & Julia Dashin’s Foundation was the event’s main sponsor which was held under the auspices of the mayor of Limassol.

The concert was organized by the Angara Art School, the first established Russian Traditional School that aims to preserve customs and traditions across Cyprus by promoting the arts and culture of Russia. Maslenitsa, an Eastern Slavic folk holiday that takes place the week before the start of Russian Orthodox Lent, celebrates the end of winter and the beginning of spring. Also known as ‘pancake and butter week’, Maslenitsa is mostly famous for eating and drinking, blini (Russian pancakes), sour cream and caviar as well as the participation to various games and joyous celebrations.

With more than 300 attendees, the theatre was filled with splendid folk attire and headdresses, a colourful maypole while a masterclass was held at the theatre’s foyer. The organizers made sure to create a festive atmosphere, for the children especially, with lots of wonderful surprises.

Co-Founder, Julia Dashina stated that “Maslenitsa is a time to come together to celebrate the end of winter through delicious buttery food and games. This event has given us the opportunity to re-connect with our Russian roots, support the Russian Community living on the island as well as promote a cultural festival for everyone who wants to experience something different for free”.
