Andrey & Julia Dashin’s Foundation Continue to Support Russian Theater Seasons in Limassol
Andrey & Julia Dashin’s Foundation, in collaboration with the Russian Cultural Centre in Nicosia, was proud to be a General Sponsor of ‘The Gamblers’, a classical play written by Nikolay Gogol. This theater piece, as part of the Russian Theater Seasons in Cyprus, was performed at the “Pattihio” Municipal Theater in Limassol on 31 May and was produced by the famous Akimov Saint Petersburg Comedy Theatre.
The play’s detective storyline captures even the most sophisticated puzzle lover. Set in a provincial hotel, there are a group of high-level card players. They team up to break the big score by cheating the local landowner with marked cards. Who will become lucky and take the bank? Who knows? After all, the game is an insidious thing -today you might be lucky, but tomorrow you could lose it all in ten minutes. The protagonist, Ikhariov – unlike his “comrades” – is not just an adventurer and a scammer; he is an idealist, a genius of his art. For him, the game is poetry….
Founder Andrey Dashin commented that:
“For the second time, we have supported theater play in collaboration with the Russian Cultural Centre. ‘The Gamblers’ is a well-known and loved piece of Russian literature and it was a great honor for us to support this famous play and further promote Russian culture in Cyprus. Moreover, we will continue to sponsor the Russian Theater Seasons with three more plays in Limassol in the upcoming season, which will start in September 2019”.
On the 18th May at the Rialto Theatre, Limassol, the Foundation also supported the children’s play ‘The Wizard of Oz’. It was performed by the St. Petersburg A. Bryantsev Youth Theatre – one of the first world’s professional children’s theatres which opened in 1922.
The Akimov Saint Petersburg Comedy Theatre was founded in 1929 as the Theater of Satire. In 1935, the theatre was renamed Leningrad Comedy Theatre and assigned Nikolay Akimov to the role of director and artist. Just five years later, the theater was acknowledged as one of the best in the country. In 1989, it was renamed after Nikolay Akimov himself in honour of his great work.
