A sense of charity, generosity and compassion has existed in the Russian character through the ages.

The Morozovs , well-known textile manufactures, or the Demidovs come to mind. Philanthropy has now become an integral part of modern society; popstars, athletes, famous politicians and businessmen are all involved in charity campaigns, patronage of the arts, organizing charity funds, many of which offer assistance to orphans.
